problem:
The client desired a logo and visual design for the UNI Flute Studio, to be used in print, digital media and t-shirt designs.

Design a logo to represent the UNI Flute Studio that is easily adaptable across a variety of designs. The client wanted branded studio t-shirts to be worn by all studio members while hosting the Iowa Flute Festival 2018 at UNI.

Research

Understanding the Audience

Creating a logo and visual branding for the UNI Flute Studio provides many benefits, including:

Brand Awareness

Having a distinct visual design elevates the UNI Flute Studio brand and awareness by appearing in all potential media

Recruitment

Creating a brand for the UNI flute studio helps with flute studio recruitment and increases potential recruitment interest in UNI.

Studio Cohesion

Wearing and sharing a logo and brand helps to increase studio cohesiveness and culture within the UNI School of Music

Process

Inspiration
goal:

Create an easily recognizable logo that can serve as the cornerstone to the UNI Studio brand.

logo priorities:

Based on feedback and brainstorming with the client, we came up with items to prioritize in the logo design:

  • Must have a flute(s) in the design
  • Clean and modern look
  • Incorporate "UNI Flute Studio"
  • Square or circle proportions preferred for social media usability
Logo
process:

Draw and digitize flute using Adobe Illustrator

Play with positive and negative space

Iterate using a radial grid & add text

Implementing Feedback

After discussing the logo iteration with the client, we decided that the radial grid is the right direction for the logo and that we'd like to incorporate the text into the radial design.

The client loved this iteration and decided to move forward with t-shirt and print design!

Iteration

UNI Flute Studio T-shirts
goal:

Design UNI Flute Studio t-shirts to represent the brand while the UNI Flute Studio hosted the Iowa Flute Festival 2018. The shirts will help make festival attendees aware of the studio brand and who to turn to for festival help and questions.

After coordinating with a local t-shirt shop, we were able to order the shirts. Silver metallic lettering on charcoal fabric.

Floyd Flute Family Celebration T-shirts
increase scope:

The client liked the branding so much that she decided to develop another t-shirt for a future event, the Floyd Flute Family Celebration in honor of her retirement.

challenge:

- Modify the existing logo to better celebrate Dr. Angeleita Floyd's retirement and years of service.
- The back of the shirt is to be a digital version of her stylized signature, flute and text.
- Coordinate with the university to ensure that all UNI Style Guide rules are met and approved.

process:

Collect a sample of the "Angeleita" signature to digitize using Adobe Illustrator.

To accommodate a special client request, I digitized the client's favorite sketch of the "Floyd flute" to incorporate into the design.

Takeaways

Impact

It was great to see the studio cohesiveness and fun sparked by the UNI Studio Logo and shirts. The students loved the shirts and kept wearing them on a regular basis and potential recruits showed interest in buying shirts as well.

What I Learned

I learned a lot about making beautiful designs within a style guide. In order to produce the final result, I worked with a representative at UNI to make sure to meet all style standards. The guide required specifics such as type face standards, color restrictions, and university logo requirements.

Next Steps

1. Produce an updated shirt for the studio with the current studio members.
2. Conduct usability testing to see where there is room for improvement and get feedback on the designs.
