goal:
Design an app for Global Taco that allows users to easily order customizable and allergy-friendly meal pick-up.

Research

Understanding the User

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the Global Taco App users and their needs. The primary user group identified through research was busy adults who don’t have much time to cook and desire allergy-conscious healthy options.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Global Taco’s customers, but research revealed that time alone is not the only factor limiting users from cooking at home. Users preferred using their limited time after work for quality family time and other interests rather than spending time grocery shopping or going out to eat in person.

User Pain Points
Time

Working adults are too busy to meal-prep.

Allergy-Friendly

Platforms for ordering food are not equipped to accommodate food allergies and preferences.

Healthy Options

Busy adults have trouble finding healthy take-out options.

Xavier's Persona

why personas:

I developed multiple personas & journey maps based on user research to increase empathy for the users. For example, I developed the Persona “Xavier” to illustrate one of the user groups:

"I work long hours so I need healthy dinner options on my way home from work so I can enjoy more time with my family" - Xavier

Easy & allergy friendly ordering process for the home screen to help users save time

process:

Stars were used to mark the elements of each sketch to combine into one digital wireframes of each screen.

  • User can mark common allergies or write in “Notes” for special food concerns.
Low-Fidelity Prototype Usability Study Findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. My findings from Round 1 were conducted on a wireframe and helped guide the design to the next phase: mockups. The Round 2 usability study was conducted on a hi-fidelity prototype and uncovered the next aspects requiring refinement.

Round 1 Findings
  • Users need better cues for customizing food items
  • Back buttons need to be easier to use
  • Users want to easily decide if they want to save their payment method.
Round 2 Findings
  • Users need better cues for allergy designations
  • Users need better cues for confirming the restaurant location
  • Users need more intuitive tip settings

Accessibility

Color & Typography

Provides access to users with vision impairment by providing easy to read color schemes& typography styles/sizes.

  • Improves usability
  • Reduces eye strain
  • Provides hierarchy
  • Reinforce branding
Color Contrast

Color contrast accessibility was altered and checked to meet WCAG requirements using a Color Contrast Figma plug-in.

Icons & Imagery

I developed a logo, branded icons and category icons to reinforce:

  • Accessibility
  • Branding
  • Color Schemes
  • Usability
  • Fun!

Takeaways

Impact

The Global Taco app makes users feel included by providing options for allergy and health conscious users.

What I Learned

While designing the Global Taco app, I learned that the early ideas are intended to bloom and develop. I enjoyed learning from the usability studies because it provides a clear direction for future iterations and continuously improves the design.

Next Steps

1. Conduct Round 3 Usability Study to understand if the concerned were effectively addressed.
2. Conduct more user research to determine any additional needs.
3. Do an iconography study on category icons to better understand user preferences and biases.
